Kentucky Lake Area Information
Since it's creation in 1944 by the Tennessee Valley Authority, Kentucky Lake (160,309 acres) is one of the largest man-made bodies of water in North America. Together with Lake Barkley (58,000 acres) the two lakes feature more than 4,000 miles of shoreline and 3,000 miles of water. Both lakes feature world-class fishing for largemouth & smallmouth bass, crappie, catfish, blue gill, and more. It's deep navigable water attracts thousands of visitors per year for boating, swimming and kayaking. Tourists also enjoy visiting the two Kentucky State Parks that adjoin Kentucky Lake: Kenlake State Park and Kentucky Dam Village State Park.
Land Between the Lakes is a 170,000 acre National Recreation Area that lies between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley which features abundant wildlife and over 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline. Visitors are drawn to LBL for its numerous RV and backcountry campsites; hundreds of miles of hiking, horse and ATV trails; and prevalent hunting and fishing opportunities. The Homeplace is a working 19th Century farm on the south end of LBL that allows visitors to experience firsthand the daily life and activities of this bygone era. Other popular attractions include the Elk & Bison Prairie and the Woodlands Nature Station.
